Taxes: Why?

Property Taxes

A tax to support the services neccessary to live in a community.  These are services that an individual is not able to safely provide individually.  Property taxes are a way to pay for these services by basing each person’s contribution to the greater good on the amount of the property they own or are using (renters).  This is not making a payment on your holdings, but a way to provide services like public schools, K-12, Vo-tech, county roads and bridges, and sheriff’s department, courts, and jail.

Property tax revenues in Garfield County, Oklahoma, are disbursed by the Garfield County Treasurer to fund local public services and government operations.
Property tax amounts and distributions varies by school district.      Below are charts for the Enid and Waukomis School District.   The tax rate for Enid is 10.798% of 12.5% of the assessed value of the property.  (approx. 0.0135% of assessed property value).    The Waukomis tax rate is 10.396% of 12.5% of the value of your property.  (approx. 0.013% of assessed value of property)

When someone tells you they want to reduce taxes, ask them these questions:
What is the current surplus?
If there is no surplus, which services will be reduced?
If no services are expected to be cut, from where will the funding come to keep those services?
Should those who are unable to pay at the current rate receive relief through tax credits based on income instead of defunding schools, county services, county law enforment and justice departments?
Ask yourself these questions:
Am I concerned about the current services, or lack thereof?
Where will future funding come from?
Is the funding based on ability to pay?
Sales taxes as a percentage of income costs those on lower income more than those with higher income.  Can I afford higher sales tax for the rest of my life?
